Stouffville race team welcomes new sponsor with win in Bowmanville

Jason Hathaway accomplished something he had not done before while competing in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series’ Pinty’s presents the Clarington 200 race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park just north of Bowmanville Sunday.

Driving the Stouffville-based EHR-Team Three Red’s Muskoka Aircraft Centre/HGC Chevrolet, Hathaway drove off with the checkered flag in a race conducted on a road course.

Making Hathaway’s feat even more rewarding was that prior to qualifying, the team made an engine change and added a sponsor in Muskoka Aviation Centre just in time for the race.

Beginning the race that was held on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn course in the 10th position, Hathaway took the lead from L.P. Dumoulin with just three laps to go before the race’s final restart.

Dumoulin had gone to the front on Lap 42 after Jeff Lapcevich and Alex Tagliani, who led 12 laps, had tangled for the lead.

“It was pretty exciting,” Hathaway said.

“We probably had a fifth-place car by the time we shook things out. But we got good track conditions and I could see the front and a couple of late cautions gave us a shot to win. I just capitalized on it.

“It’s great for my car owner and everyone involved with my team.”

With the victory, Hathaway moved up to second place in the overall series standings with one race to go in the series at Kawartha Speedway Sept. 19.

Hathaway has 394 points and is just nine behind leader Scott Steckly.
